Ideally start with a good-sized toolbox, one that only houses all of your emergency gear. Preferably it should be made out of a durable plastic material. Make sure it fits securely in your car and wont tip over and break easily.
Emergency Kit Check List
You should have these items stored in the toolkit:
- Fresh bottled water
- Sunscreen
- Jumper Cables
- Flashlight – with spare batteries
- Road Flares
- Paper Towel
- Duct Tape
- Kitty Litter – for cleaning oil/petrol spills
- First-aid Kit
- Long-sleeve shirt and wide brimmed hat
- Long-life food provisions – at least two days’ supply
- Matches or a fire-starting tool
- Mirror
- Fully charged Lithium battery pack
- USB cable & adapter to suit your phone
- Large Ziplock bags
- Rope
- Maps
- Compass
Optional Items for the Emergency Kit
- GPS unit
- Fresh car oil
- Spray bottler and washer fluid
- Anti-freeze liquid
- Fuses to suit your car
- $50 in cash (broken up into smaller notes/coin)
- Rope suitable for towing
- General Toolkit containing:
- Spanners
- Adjustable Wrench

- Allen Keys
- Tire Gauge
Getting it Together
While this list is a good start it isn’t a definitive list and you may need to add or remove things based on your area and where you’ll be driving. If you don’t feel confident building the kit yourself, there are many pre-made or beginner kits to get you started.
It’s a good idea to regularly evaluate what is in your kit. As you may find that some items are not needed, and you’d rather make space available for something of more importance.
